Game Recap

The Raiders struck first with 24:10 to play in the first half when Sally Hoffman made a move on the right side and then sent a rocket kick that got past a diving goalkeeper McLendon Farr.

Houston Academy made it 2-0 when Lilla Stjernstrom sent a beautiful corner kick that Sydney Jeffcoat took in front of the goal and nicely deposited it into the back of the net with 2:12 to play in the opening 40 minutes.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Eagles had a good opportunity to score when Hannah Grace Dykes missed wide right after goalkeeper Kate Andrews came out to defend. It was Dykes again with a scoring chance a few minutes later with a sharp shot on goal that Andrews made a strong save on.

HA’s Jaycie Conner got a good shot on goal with under 17 minutes to play, but Farr made an excellent save. Farr made another great save when the ball got loose in front of the goal after a Stjsernstrom free kick late in the game.

“The whole team played solid,” Magnus Stjernstrom said. “I think we should have taken care of some scoring chances, but overall I was very pleased with the team. They followed the plan and it worked.”

Providence coach Danielle Lee challenged her team at halftime and was proud of how they competed in the second half.

“I was just trying to get some spark in them – a desire and want to win,” Lee said. “I thought they did well in the second half. They connected passes better and talked better. I thought we possessed more and challenged things more, but just didn’t finish like we wanted to.”
