Raiders JV Boys Soccer team loses a heartbreaker to Andalusia

The Houston Academy JV boys’ soccer team hosted Andalusia for a rematch on Tuesday March 7, 2017. The Raiders were ready for the fast pace attack that they saw from Andalusia on February 14, 2017, in a match that resulted in Andalusia winning 2-1. Davis Mims, goalkeeper, was ready for the attack as he had four keeper saves in the first half. His defensive unit of JC Daugherty, Greg Sexton, Thomas Barron, and Luke Fernandez played together and were determined to not allow Andalusia a goal. They marked up assigned players and when possible they moved forward to catch Andalusia in offside traps. With each offside trap and free kicks, the Raiders countered with an offensive attack, resulting in four shots in the half from Grant Dalton, Drew Marshall, Luke Thompson, and Braden Phillipps. The game seesawed back and forth, until about 29 minutes into the game. Michael Flanagan came into the game for starting forward Conner Henexson. He received a pass from Braden Phillipps and converted a 15 yard kick for the first goal of the game. The half ended as Trent Wiley, Caleb Hubbard, Sam Middleton, Logan Bolton and Justin Lisenby gave the starters a much needed ten minute break.

With the starters rested and ready to play, the second half began with Andalusia playing fast and play began to get more physical. As Andalusia had a rush on goal, resulting in a corner kick, the kick was taken, but a penalty kick was called due to a holding call. Gage Theus was called upon to make the kick and he converted it to tie the game 1-1. The game went back and forth at a fast pace. The Raiders had a total of 8 shots, 8 corner kicks, and 4 direct kicks on goal, but nothing would go into the net. Then, at 31 minutes into the second half, Andalusia got another free kick due to a tripping call from 23 yards out. Gage Theus took the kick and curved it from left to right and beat the Raiders goalkeeper. With only four minutes to go in the game, the Raiders had two additional attacks on goal, but to no avail. The game ended with Andalusia winning 2-1.

The Raider’s season record is 2-7-1. They will travel Saturday March 11, 2017 to Eclectic Middle school for a 10 am game and then play Pike Road at 2 pm.
