Raiders JV Boys Soccer team hosts Montgomery Catholic

The Houston Academy Raiders JV boys’ soccer team hosted the Montgomery Catholic Knights on Tuesday March 14, 2017. The Raiders played with intensity and desire to win, as they scored two goals within the first 2 minutes of the game. Braden Phillipps opened up the game, when he got a pass from Grant Dalton from the right side of the goal and took a 15 yard shot that put the Raiders on the score board. Less than a minute later, Drew Marshall received a pass from Drake Vaudo and finished the shot.

The game see sawed back and forth, but at 8 minutes into the 1st half, the Raiders continued with their offensive momentum with Marshall sending a pass across to the left side where Luke Thompson was waiting. He trapped the ball, turned, and put the ball into the back of the net. Caleb Hubbard, Trent Wiley, Michael Flanagan, and Landon Wheelless came into the game to give starters a much needed rest. At the 18 minute mark of the first half, Wiley worked to get a pass to Hubbard in the center of the field, who put the ball into the back of the net. The Raiders finished the first half 4-0.

As the second half began, the Knights had the kick off and took the ball down on attack against the Raiders goal. The Raiders with stood the attack and was able to get back on track and gain their offensive momentum. Then at 12 minutes into the 2nd half, Conner Henexson won the ball from a defender and took a 20 yard shot that beat the Knights’ goal keeper. The score of 5-0 held until there was only 4 minutes to go in the match. Drake Vaudo and Landon Wheelless both scored unassisted with shots from 25 yards out.

The Raiders offense took 41 shots, 2 corner kicks, and 2 direct kicks on goal as seven different players scored in the game. The goal keeper position was shared by Davis Mims and Luke Fernandez, as they recorded the shutout. The team’s defense was determined to earn the shutout and played the game from start to finish with determination and focus.

The Raider’s season record is 5-7-1. They will host the Providence Christian Eagles on Thursday March 16, 2017 for a 5 pm match at the Westgate Soccer Complex.
